On Wednesday, July18, 2018, SOMAGEP-SA participated in the largest clean-up in Africa by organizing an ActForChange event named “Africa to Djicoroni Para” with the support of the WaterWorX program. The goal was to clean up the neighborhood and make people aware that the waste that they throw into the environment end up in the Niger River from which SOMAGEP collects water that flows in their taps. The heavy rain that fell on the city the day before the activity and forced the organizers to change location did not deter the population from participating in this clean-up operation. In fact, more than 150 people including SOMAGEP staff, SOMAPEP, EDM, local youth and women's associations and several NGOs participated in the major event. With their gloves, biodegradable garbage bags, caps and hat offered by SOMAGEP, they managed to clear the area of more than 400 bags of waste.
At the end of a busy half-day, SOMAGEP SA Human Resources Manager, Abdoul Aziz TRAORE, thanked all the participants for their mobilization and their dedication and expressed his desire to repeat this action in the vicinity of the various stations, as “it is normal to keep the neighborhood clean”. Following him, the head of the youth association, Moussa Doumbia, promised to serve as a relay for other young people to get the message across.
