UGANDA/ FIRST COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS PROFESSIONAL WOMEN FOR WATER AND SANITATION (PW4WATSAN) AT KAWEMPE HOSPITAL

PW4WATSAN is a registered network established to empower, encourage and support the professional career and social development of women in order to enhance their physical and social growth both at local and international levels. Established in April 2017 in recognition of the significant contribution of women towards the attainment of the NWSC vision & mission.

Today, the Patron of Professional Women for Water and Sanitation (PW4WATSAN), Dr. Rose Kaggwa, her President Ms. Irene Mwase, Ms. Zam Musoke, Ms. Agatha Arembe, Ms. Vivien Newumbe; together with club members partnered with the women at local leadership level with in Kawempe Division; had community engagement, cleanup exercise and gave back to women at Kawempe Women’s Hospital.

The club aims at enhancing capacities in the women profession, reach out to the girl child, improve careers, help the younger generation and address issues related to water and sanitation in the community.

The team was warmly received by the Head of Low Risk Maternity Wing - Dr Twinomuhangi Sulphine at Kawempe Hospital together with Dr. Apinyo J. They thanked the Professional ladies from NWSC and were pleased to be the first hospital to benefit from the community outreach of Professional Women for Water and Sanitation.

Its pride that women have taken the lead in sanitation and should not be taken for granted. Educate a lady, educate a nation and promote the girl child. The Doctors also encouraged others to emulate what NWSC Professional Women have done to make the place a better place to live in.

Dr Rose in her remarks, thanked NWSC Women leaders who have made an impact to give back to the community at the first outreach - Kawempe Hospital. As women, there is a lot that can be done that doesn’t require money; but determination and manpower. Ladies are encouraged to get together to clean up the hospital for the good of the ladies and the community at large. She also thanked the Police for all the help rendered during the exercise.

Ms. Irene Mwase expressed her gratitude to the ladies for turning up in big numbers and this has given the club motivation to do more in communities to promote sanitation. She added, that the club was started to promote unity among the ladies and help the girl child excel.

Madam Aisha Mugyenzi- NRM Chairperson Women Council – Kawempe Division thanked NWSC for choosing this day to give back to the women community in Kawempe.

Viviene Newumbe thanked the ladies from Kawempe Division for responding to the call and being patient as the cleaning exercise was going on. She emphasized that the PW4WATSAN club was started to help ladies achieve more in their Profession.

Agatha Arembe encouraged ladies to do their best in pushing forward the sanitation and hygiene idea to the communities and it starts with the family. She emphasized proper disposal of plastics, polythene bags, clearing the bush around our homes to avoid diseases and often wash our hands with soap and clean water.

We had a wonderful time with the communities.
