The World Water Day is celebrated around the world every March 22. Côte d'Ivoire, along with other countries, celebrated this day on March 23, 2017 at the Prime Ministry's Auditorium in the presence of several members of the Government, technical and financial partners, as well as the water community in Côte d'Ivoire. Focusing on the national theme ''Making Wastewater a Source of Wealth'', this commemorative day was punctuated by a series of addresses, including that of the Ivorian Prime Minister, delivered by the Minister of Urban Health Environment and Sustainable development.
Conveying the message of the government, Anne Désirée OULOTO emphasized the choice of this year's general theme: "Wastewater". For that Minister, 80% of wastewater in Côte d'Ivoire is released into the environment without any type of treatment. That is why she has called for the improvement of the whole process that starts from the collection, treatment and to the reuse of wastewater.
This ceremony was the backdrop for the presentation of the major structuring projects implemented in Côte d'Ivoire. Facing the entire government delegation, several organizations, including SODECI and ONAD, presented their achievements in terms of sanitation and drainage. The Managing Director of SODECI, EBAH Basile, presented a map of the networks and wastewater plants in the city of Abidjan. For his part, Amara SANOGO, the Managing Director of ONAD, presented the first fecal sludge treatment plant established in the town of Korhogo in northern Côte d'Ivoire.
The Minister of Construction, Housing, Sanitation and Urban Planning, Claude Isaac DE, pointed out that the issue of water is the business of the whole Government. For him, a framework for collaboration with municipalities is needed to enable them to play their role in sanitation and drainage.
Thus, in order to accelerate the increase in the national coverage rate (wastewater) and drainage, the government policy and strategy document entitled "Institutional and Sectoral Policies for Sanitation in Côte d'Ivoire" was officially presented to all ministers, technical and financial partners, as well as to the mayors attending this celebration of the 25th World Water Day.
