On February 9, 2017, Amedé Kouakou, the Minister of Economic Infrastructure, visited the Angre-Djiby water tower in the Municipality of Cocody (municipality of the Ivorian economic Capital City). He subsequently went to the headquarters of the Côte d'Ivoire Water Supply Utility (SODECI) in Treichville. Recently appointed in January 2017, the new Minister said that the trip is intended to immerse himself in the realities of these bodies responsible for water provision and under his Ministry tutelage. This was also an opportunity for him to discuss, with the different stakeholders of the sector, the problem of supplying drinking water to the populations in the District of Abidjan.visite

At the end of the visit, the Minister stated that the Government of Côte d'Ivoire has decided to extend the drinking water supply network to all municipalities in the District of Abidjan. With regards the municipality of Abobo (note: municipality located in the northern side of Abidjan) that is experiencing some difficulties, “the populations will be relieved around May 2017". “If the problem of drinking water remains and is acutely experienced in some municipalities of the District of Abidjan, this is due to the lack of investment in this sector for several years”, the Minister added. However, he welcomed the efforts made by SODECI, which, thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities, provides quality water to the populations. SODECI supplies 5 million inhabitants in the District of Abidjan and provides 66.8% of the national production.

The Djibi drinking water plant visited by Minister Amedé Kouakou was inaugurated in 2012 for an investment of 9.7 billion FCFA with a production capacity of 5,000m3 and an hourly treatment capacity of 1,000m3, Olivier GOSSO, Abidjan Production Manager and President of the Scientific and Technical Council of the African Water Association, explained.
