The Sustainable Water and Sanitation program in Africa (SUWASA) funded by USAID expires in September 2015. In anticipation of this deadline, Tetra Tech, responsible for the implementation of this program, organized from 11th to 13th May 2015, a forum in Kampala, to present what has been done for 6 years in 9 countries in Africa, draw lessons and see how it can be capitalized by all industry players of the water and sanitation in Africa. Several presentations were made on:
- Achieving Financially Sustainable Services
- Cross Cutting Issues such as gender mainstreaming in the water services in urban areas, the water management in small towns, or providers of private water services network
- Governance and Accountability of Urban Water Service
- Mobilizing Finance
- Urban Sanitation
These different presentations enabled to highlight the shortcomings of the companies are among others the absence of increased infrastructure according to demographic changes, the lack of stability and financial profitability, lack of information and control establish real goals and directives, lack of investment in gender issues.
The participants particularly appreciated the performance guide for water utilities (Performance Pathway for Water Utilities) that describes a simple and effective approach to make a more efficient society. In total, SUWASA developed and implemented successfully reform plans for 17 water and sanitation activities and helped to improve effectively, consumer services in 9 countries where the program has been implemented.
