The 10th edition of the “Ask the experts” series will be organized on December 4, 2024 from 13h00 to 15h00 UTC (Abidjan time) and the topic to be treated will be:
Water Reuse Unlocked: Global Insights, Local Impact, and Innovations for Water Security
Water scarcity is a growing challenge worldwide, exacerbated by climate change, rapid urbanization, and population growth. In many regions, including Africa, access to clean water and effective sanitation services is increasingly under threat. Shifts in precipitation patterns, prolonged droughts, and the over-extraction of freshwater resources have intensified the pressure on existing water supplies and infrastructure. Moreover, inadequate governance frameworks and service delivery systems in the water and sanitation sector often hinder efforts to address these challenges.
Water reuse offers a transformative solution to enhance water security, ensuring sustainable access for communities while reducing dependency on freshwater sources. By integrating innovative practices and technologies, water reuse can strengthen resilience against climate impacts and promote long-term sustainability in water resource management.
Two African and two German experts are invited to present and discuss their insights and learnings from four perspectives as described below:
-
Global perspective: Siemens (Sebastian Guckelberger & Melliscent Mashinini), Germany/South Africa – how does a global company approach this topic? Which actions does Siemens take to support Reuse?
-
Local perspective: Office National de l'Assainissement et du Drainage (ONAD) de Cote d’Ivoire (Amaro Sanogo, Directeur Général) – to what extent is Reuse currently being done in Cote d’Ivoire, and which technologies are being used for it?
-
Research & Innovation perspective: FiW - Research Institute for Water Management and Climate Future at RWTH Aachen University (Dr. Eng. Manuel Krauß), Germany - „ecReUSe - Water Reuse and Sustainable Energy Production at Wastewater Treatment Plants a pilot project in BCMM / South Africa”
Municipal Perspective: Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (Mkhuseli Nongogo), South Africa – “Perspectives of Water Reuse in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality/South Africa”
The moderator of the session will be Ms. Geraldine Mpouma Logmo (CamWater).
