Webinar : Non-Revenue Water in Africa: Challenges, Impacts, and Solutions to Improve Service Performance
Register Now
Non-Revenue Water (NRW) remains one of the most significant challenges facing water utilities across Africa. In many cities, losses resulting from network leaks, fraud, metering inaccuracies, and billing inefficiencies account for a substantial share of the water produced, directly affecting the technical, financial, and operational performance of service providers.
To foster dialogue and promote the exchange of solutions, the African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) in collaboration with the African Network Media for WASH (RAM-WASH) is organizing a webinar on the theme:
“Non-Revenue Water in Africa: Challenges, Impacts and Solutions to Improve Utility Performance”
📅 25 June 2026 🕒 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM UTC
A Strategic Challenge for African Water Utilities
In some African countries, non-revenue water exceeds 40% of the total water produced. This situation leads to significant revenue losses, limits utilities’ capacity to invest in infrastructure, and affects the quality of services delivered to customers.
Reducing non-revenue water is not only about minimizing losses. It is also a powerful way to improve overall utility performance, strengthen financial resilience, optimize the use of water resources, and enhance attractiveness to technical and financial partners.
Practical Experiences at the Heart of the Discussion
This webinar will go beyond a theoretical analysis of the issue. Water sector professionals will share practical field experiences and present the results achieved through non-revenue water reduction programs.
Participants will learn how some water utilities have successfully:
- Significantly reduced network losses;
- Improved leak detection and repair processes;
- Strengthened customer connection monitoring and billing systems;
- Increased revenues without raising tariffs;
- Enhanced service quality and continuity;
- Improved their ability to finance new investments.
Speakers will also discuss the challenges they faced, the lessons learned, and the success factors that can be adapted to other African contexts.
Innovation, Governance and Financing
The webinar will also explore emerging approaches that are transforming non-revenue water management, including:
- Smart metering technologies;
- Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and monitoring sensors;
- Data analytics and digital decision-support tools;
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
- Organizational reforms and capacity-building initiatives;
- Innovative financing mechanisms for loss-reduction programs.
Discussions will further examine the role of governments, regulators, and financial partners in supporting sustainable improvements in utility performance.
Why Participate?
During this webinar, participants will benefit from expert insights, practical experiences from sector practitioners, and actionable recommendations to design or strengthen their non-revenue water reduction strategies.
