Message From the Executive Director of AfWASA
On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026, celebrated on March 8 under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” the African water and sanitation community reaffirms its commitment to building a more just and inclusive society, where every woman and girl can fully exercise her rights and contribute to sustainable development.
Across Africa, women play a vital role in the daily management of water and sanitation. Within households and communities, they are often responsible for water collection, ensuring family hygiene, and safeguarding public health. At the same time, women are increasingly assuming technical, scientific, and leadership roles within institutions and public water utilities, contributing their expertise to the advancement of the sector.
Through its capacity-building programs, dialogue platforms, and initiatives promoting women’s leadership, the African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) works actively to strengthen women’s participation in the governance and transformation of the sector. The Association has also adopted a Gender Strategy, which serves as a structured framework to promote equal opportunities and to systematically integrate gender considerations into water and sanitation policies, programs, and initiatives across Africa.
These efforts are gradually producing tangible results, with more women gaining access to leadership positions and participating in key decision-making processes. On this symbolic day, we express our deep appreciation for the commitment, courage, and leadership of African women. Their contribution is essential to building a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
